“Building Fences in the Texas Bayou……..’til the Cows Come Home”
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International is announcing its Hurricane Ike Rapid Response disaster relief campaign in Chambers County Texas. Lodging and meals has been established in Old River, Texas for volunteer farmers and ranchers to donate time to re-build fences destroyed by Hurricane Ike’s storm surge. Hurricane Ike made landfall September 12th in Galveston Bay and had a coastal storm surge that reached 275 mile east of the hurricane’s eye. Louisiana Parishes received storm surge damage from Hurricane Ike. The USDA Beef Extension Specialists in Chambers, Jefferson and Orange Counties in Texas report over 40,000 head of cattle have been stranded and are being rounded up in the two weeks following landfall
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers’ assessment team has directly contacted Southeast Texas ranchers to learn what is needed. Range cubes were shipped to feed stressed beef cows to correct rumen function altered by salt water. Hay is needed, but is available locally. Cash donations are needed to buy truckloads of range cubes and diesel fuel to transport donated hay. Two truckloads of cubes have been organized by Rapid Response Coordinator, John Adams, Crestwood, Kentucky, for cattle in South Louisiana.
Melvin Bell, Rapid Response Coordinator, Mahomet, Illinois led a team of 17 Indiana farmers to begin the New Year building perimeter fences in Chambers County and drylot pens to use to winter feed hay. Storm surge water is still standing in some of the Gulf Coast pastures. Over a 1000 miles of perimeter fences will need to be rebuilt this winter, just as was the case following Hurricane Rita in 2006.
Please pray for the Lord’s protection and strength for the farm families impacted by hurricane damage. For many families in the bayou, they have been wiped out twice in three years. The Lord Jesus commanded us to, “Love the Lord thy God with all your heart & strength; and love your neighbor as yourself .” The Fellowship of Christian Farmers is striving to puts wheels under this prayer.
