Hurricane Gus & Ike Rapid Response disaster relief campaign in Louisiana and Texas.
September 24, 2008
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International is announcing it’s Hurricane Gus & Ike Rapid Response disaster relief campaign in Louisiana and Texas. Hurricane Gustav made landfall on September 1 and produced storm surge, 115 mph winds and 12 inches of rain across Louisiana. Hurricane Ike made landfall September 12 in Galveston Bay and had a coastal storm surge that reached 275 mile east of the hurricane’s eye. Louisiana Parishes received storm surge damage from both hurricanes. The USDA Beef Extension Specialists in Vermillion & Cameron Parishes and in Chambers, Jefferson and Orange Counties in Texas report over 20,000 head of cattle have been stranded and are being rounded up in the past two weeks.
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers’ assessment team has directly contacted South Louisiana ranchers to learn what is needed. Range cubes are needed to feed stressed beef cows to correct rumen function altered by salt water. Hay is needed, but is available locally. Cash donations are needed to buy truckloads of range cubes and diesel fuel to transport donated hay. Two truckloads of cubes has been organized by Rapid Response Coordinator, John Adams, Crestwood, Kentucky, for cattle in South Louisiana.
David Westerfeld in Crawford, Texas is coordinating the Fellowship’s haylift in Texas. 600 5X6 round bales are available and ready to ship when Chambers County Extension and the local Cattlemen’s Association are ready for more hay.
Melvin Bell, Rapid Response Coordinator, Mahomet, Illinois will be in Louisiana and Texas the week of October 6th to determine when fencing can be replaced. Storm surge water is still standing in much of the Gulf Coast pastures. Many miles of perimeter fences will need to be rebuilt this winter, just as was the case following Hurricane Rita in 2006.
Please pray for the Lord’s protection and strength for the farm families impacted by hurricane damage. For many families in the bayou, they have been wiped out twice in three years. The Lord Jesus commanded us to, “Love the Lord thy God with all your heart & strength; and love your neighbor as yourself .” The Fellowship of Christian Farmers is striving to puts wheels under this prayer.
